I’m not quite sure how it came about, but apparently – today is JDRF’s first annual Type 1 Day (that link is to Meg – who is apparently our cheesy diabetes spokesperson?). While I was looking at the videos of Meg, I found this one which I think is a better fit for diabetes awareness.
Speaking of videos and awareness, in case you haven’t seen it – Cherise asked me to make a video to share why I will “Wear Blue” every Friday in November. I would prefer to stay behind the camera, but here’s what I came up with –
(you should see the outtakes – actually, maybe I should work on that!)
The goal of Type 1 Day is to bring awareness to type 1 diabetes. I would like to bring awareness to the fact that it isn’t just children who get type 1 diabetes. When I started to show the characteristic signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes, even the doctors were confused. I was about to turn 22, so why would I be diagnosed with something that used to have “juvenile” in its name?
It was not until I ended up in the hospital in severe DKA that anyone figured out what was going on. When you hear hoofbeats, think horse. But when you start to see stripes – think zebra.
