He remembered my swag

My first experience with diabetes conference SWAG * (Stuff We All Get) was at Friends for Life 2008. I came home with a large bag full of free stuff from various pharmaceutical companies and other vendors, but once I sorted through all of it, a small pen became my absolute favorite item. When I got my fancy camera, it was even one of my first subjects.

I was devastated when I broke the pen a few months later. I searched and searched online, but by then Nick Jonas had replaced the “simple wins.” There was no way, simple or complicated, for me to get a new pen.

I was telling my sad tale to a representative from that pharmaceutical company at Friends for Life in 2011. I was lamenting the change in company branding more than anything else. That’s when I was so surprised when he made his offer.

The rep told me to come back the next day and he would have something for me. You can tell how excited I was by what he found in the corner of the trunk of his car.

I’m taking much better care of this pen. It sits high on a shelf and I only use it to fill out important diabetes-related paperwork. Mostly I just stare at it in joy and appreciation.

Last week I was walking through the exhibit hall and a familiar face caught my eye. As I approached, he spotted me too. “I don’t have any more pens for you.”

I guess having an obsession with a conference giveaway pen makes you pretty easy to remember.

* In the diabetes world, SWAG also stands for Scientific Wild A&$ Guess. If you haven’t seen our dictionary, check it out here.
